The Checkup for May 6: Though ‘wave’ of cases continues, Pittsfield ‘trending in a good direction’

Charlie Baker has suggested that walk-ins could increasingly serve as a strategy in the state’s effort to get more people vaccinated, particularly with more young people eligible.

Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in North Adams welcomed people Thursday afternoon to walk in for their shots.

“We’re still seeing our daily cases come in in the teens,” Armstrong told the panel on Wednesday night.

As of Monday, the city had 22.4 new cases per 100,000 population, down from 45.3 cases on April 1.

“That contact tracing piece is still very important,” Armstrong said.

BY THE NUMBERS: Berkshire County saw no new COVID-19 deaths as of Thursday, leaving the total at 283 deaths, with the confirmed case count up 18 for a new total of 6,393 cases, the state Department of Public Health said.

The DPH said five new deaths were reported in Massachusetts, pushing the statewide total to 17,311.

There were 26 communities in DPH’s highest risk category last week and 48 communities deemed to be at the highest risk the week before.

WIDER WORLD OF COVID: Global cases top 155,481,806, with 3,247,557 deaths, according to data provided by Johns Hopkins University.

INFORMATION ON TESTING: “Stop the Spread” testing sites are open at three Berkshire Health Systems locations.

Locations are: Pittsfield, 505 East St., St Luke’s Square, adjacent to BHS Urgent Care Center; North Adams, 98 Church St., next to the city library; Great Barrington: 475 Main St.
