Stu Cowan: Perry’s versatility and leadership pure gold for Canadiens

1 goalie because of injuries to Carey Price, who is sidelined with a concussion after suffering a lower-body injury earlier in the season.

Not only has Perry performed on the ice, he has quickly become a leader in the locker room.

“Just being here for my first year here and being recognized by our coaching staff, by the management, by the players, by your peers, it’s pretty special,” Perry said Friday morning.

The 35-year-old is a member of the Triple Gold Club, winning gold medals with Team Canada at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics, at the 2016 IIHF World Championship and the Stanley Cup with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007.

Perry grew up as a Canadiens fan, which is one reason why he signed with the team as a free agent.

Without Toffoli, Anderson, Allen and Perry, the Canadiens would be out of the playoff race already.

In his 16th NHL season, Perry has been like a Swiss Army knife for Canadiens head coach Dominique Ducharme.

“I expect him to continue doing the same things with our group, both on the ice and with how he conducts himself in the dressing room and in team meetings,” Ducharme said about Perry.

The soft-spoken Perry prefers to let his play do the talking when it comes to his leadership role.

“You can only say so much, but you have to go out — I have to go out personally and do it,” he added.
