State champ St. Mary’s can exhale after living up to billing as nation’s No. 1 team

“I was the last one there,” Schubart said.

With a convincing 9-0 victory over Stevensville Lakeshore, they completed the mission with the Division 2 high school baseball state championship.

“It gets a little exciting – you could say – with everybody’s expectations, but we do a pretty good job of staying loose.

Eight of the nine players in the starting lineup, plus starting pitcher Tommy Allman, are already committed to playing Division I college baseball.

Mary’s also ran wild on the basepaths, swiping a state finals-record 12 bases, breaking the record of nine set by Colon in 1989.

“The plan was to split it up among three guys, but Tommy was throwing so well, we didn’t do that,” said Petry, whose father and assistant coach Dan Petry pitched for the Detroit Tigers.

There was an ounce of excitement on the final swing, however, as Lakeshore’s Grant Ruddell rocketed a deep fly to the gap.

“I was thinking we might end it with a strikeout, but the kid put the barrel on it,” Schubart said.
