Rory McIlroy has won a number of titles and is a member of an unusual group of golfers who have won three major championships before the age of twenty-five.
Rory earns $40-50 million per year from tournament winnings and endorsements, with endorsements accounting for the majority of his earnings.
Rory McIlroy was born on the 4th of May, 1989, in the Northern Irish town of Holywood.
Rory McIlroy began attending the local golf club at an early age, and at the age of seven, he became the club’s youngest ever member.
Despite the fact that his family was not very affluent, they went out of their way to ensure that Rory had the financial support he needed to pursue his dream of becoming a professional golfer.
Rory had already won the Junior Ryder Cup with the European team in 2004 when he was only 15 years old.
Following that, he earned his stripes by winning the European Amateur Championships a year later.
By the beginning of 2008, he had risen to the top 200 golfers in the world, a position he held to this day.
Following a string of strong performances in European tournaments, McIlroy completed 2009 with a world ranking in the top 10.
Considering McIlroy had not even reached the age of 21, he was the youngest golfer since Tiger Woods to win a major championship on the PGA Tour at such an early age.
It was the lowest round of any professional golfer who had been in the lead going into the third round of the tournament so far.
The next year, McIlroy would claim and lose the number one ranking on a number of occasions, eventually winning enough tournaments to solidify his place as the world’s top-ranked golfer.
Rory McIlroy had a difficult 2013 and the beginning of 2014, but he rebounded back with victories at the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool and the PGA Championship at Pebble Beach.
Following a string of victories in 2016, McIlroy was winless in his next two competitions in 2017. In 2018, he was a member of the European team that took home the Ryder Cup championship.
He became the youngest player on the European Tour to earn €10 million by the age of 22 when he was just 22 years old.
Earlier this year, it was reported that he had signed an endorsement contract with Nike valued between $100 million and $250 million dollars.
In part as a result of Nike ceasing to manufacture golf equipment shortly after, McIlroy was able to clinch a second deal with TaylorMade worth $100 million, which was only for the purpose of endorsing golf equipment.
In that year, he was the sixth-highest-paid athlete in the world, with endorsements accounting for the great majority of his yearly income of $1 million or more.
