Richie Porte: Our Tour de France rivals can’t just let me ride away

“Geraint, Tao, and Carapaz are the ones with the runs on the board when it comes to finishing off Grand Tour wins but you just never know what will happen.

Porte knows that Ineos Grenadiers’ main strength in this year’s race will be their collective depth, with an eight-man team that boasts three Grand Tour winners.

“For sure, last year I was on the podium.

Ahead of last year’s Tour de France, it genuinely looked as though Porte’s top-level career was on the wane.

There are other guys, like Geraint is the big leader here, so to be in the shadow a bit works quite well for me,” he said.

I rode with BMC, which was a fantastic team, and I really enjoyed my time at Trek Segafredo but I had to do that, not just from a financial point of view but to have my own opportunities.

It’s been an incredible journey but here at the Tour, I’d like to be part of a winning team.
