The Winters Hotel at the southwest corner of Abbott and Water streets was destroyed on the morning of April 11, 2022 — three days after a smaller fire was reported and with the building’s automatic sprinkler system turned off as a result.
An internal Atira report that tracks incidents such as drug poisonings, deaths, and violence inside the buildings showed the Winters was a relatively quiet SRO and had few reports of fires or floods.
The fire department’s final report into the fatal April 11 fire found a smaller fire three days earlier had resulted in the automatic sprinkler system being turned off.
On the morning of April 11, building staff contacted a company to have the sprinklers and smoke detector serviced, the report said.
