Punjabi Market hopes guided tour can help bring people back

The tour, which is in English, will be available to download onto mobile devices beginning July 3.

Sucha Singh Claire started the first Indian fabric shop, Shan Sarees and Drapery, on Main Street between 49th and 50th Avenues on May 31, 1970, which led to other Indian-themed businesses opening and the area soon become known as Punjabi Market.

Artist Jag Nagra, the creative director of the Punjabi Market Regeneration Collective, is featured in the tour with other artists.

“The reason we’re doing this work is because there’s so much significance here.

Every time I talk to business owners, you can see they’re struggling because of the pandemic, especially some of the shops that sell wedding decor.

Participants can answer questions and solve riddles to bag three prizes, including goodies from local vendors in the Punjabi Market.

How can we bring more of that, and that might include in the future like street food festivals or storytelling nights with some of the matriarchs of the market or workshops with weaving or art,” Nagra said.
