MCA hits pause on new cannabis retail licences | Cornwall Standard-Freeholder

About 11 cannabis retail licences have been granted in Akwesasne since October 2018, when the Canadian government legalized recreational cannabis.

The concept of licensing cannabis retailers has seen contention over the past few years in Akwesasne, culminating in a protest outside of the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Services building in 2019 where a police SUV was stolen and set on fire, and police may have used pepper spray and a taser against some protestors.
