After the wedding and event business filed for bankruptcy in October 2020, Doyle put the property up for sale the following year.
“It’s a real loss to the small grower community,” said Joe Mancini, co-founder of the Working Centre.
The first garden plot on the property was created in the spring of 2012 after Ron brought in more than 70 dump truck loads of soil, Mancini said.
Over the years, the garden grew into a hands-on learning environment that promoted and demonstrated sustainable food production in an urban setting.
With more than 13,600 kilograms of food grown each year, the garden was almost self-sustainable, Mancini said.
“My thinking right now is, it was a pretty neat experiment, and now we’re kind of in the analysis phase of it,” he said.
