According to Stuff, the now-former, 46-year-old guard was nabbed on June 4, 2021 after he was seen trying to evade a search by fellow correctional officers at the gatehouse for the Hawke’s Bay Regional Prison.

A third search of his vehicle resulted in the discovery of more packages of cannabis, cannabis oil, methamphetamine and tobacco.

New Zealand Police reports that penalties associated with cannabis, which is a Class B drug, defined as being high risk, range from a $435 fine for possession to a 14-year jail term for its supply or manufacture.

Recreational cannabis is not legal in New Zealand.
