Eli Morgan avoids natural disasters, line drives, but Cleveland Indians fall to Cubs, 7-1

All he did was pitch and get people out for five innings.

The Indians lost to the Cubs, 7-1, because they couldn’t hit Kyle Hendricks and Morgan ran out of steam in the sixth.

The fact that Morgan was able to give the Indians hope that perhaps their crisis in the starting rotation does not mean an early end to the season is a good thing as well.

The only mistake he made came on the 91 mph fastball he threw Kris Bryant with one out in the fourth.

Pinch-hitter Rafael Ortega singled him to third and Joc Pederson, who struck out in his first two at-bats, doubled to make it 3-0 and end Morgan’s night.

Nick Sandlin relieved, but walked Bryant and allowed a ground-rule double to Javier Baez that scored Pederson for a 4-0 lead.

Hendricks improved to 2-0 lifetime against Cleveland, but he looms much larger than that in the psyche of Indians fans.

Ryan Lavarnway doubled to start the second, but right fielder Jason Heyward robbed Bradley Zimmer of extra bases with a diving catch.

Josh Naylor started the fifth with a single, but the next three batters went down in order.

The Indians finally scored in the eighth when Amed Rosario, with the bases loaded, hit into a force play at second to score Zimmer from third.
