Busse has always made an effort to shop at local farmers’ markets for health and sustainability reasons, while Bezan owns and operates Carzan Land & Livestock, where he raises grass-fed beef.
“We could see the support for the local food movement growing with COVID-19, and there were also questions about the availability of food and about products coming from other countries.
Nearly everything is made in Saskatchewan — with a few products from neighbouring prairie provinces — and Busse says their goal is to eventually only carry products that are made, grown or raised in-province.
“Carter and I were both farm kids, so we always had farm meat or our grandma would can everything.
Owner Sabine Weibrich said that in recent years, they’ve seen enormous growth in the amount of markets that have opened up and are looking to carry their products.
“Stores like Carzan focus on small producers, artisan producers.
For Weibrich, stocking their products at markets like Carzan means that she doesn’t have to physically be there in order to make a sale, which means they can sell more goods and reach a wider customer base at the same time.
“We provide a space where can come and drop things off, and then customers have access to it seven days a week.
Today the Wandering Market works with over 200 suppliers, all based in Saskatchewan.
“We do deliveries for other producers and that’s because delivery is very difficult, especially with all the varying temperatures of foods,” LeBean said.
They want to go for a drive through the valley and there’s a restaurant in Southey so they make a day of it.
The farther it’s gone down the line to our generation, the more we’re getting stuff shipped from elsewhere, the more we trust big business instead of going to our neighbours,” she said.
