Brawl led to 2019 ByWard Market shooting death, video at trial shows | Ottawa Citizen

It began during a night of partying on Canada Day in 2019.

Security video presented by Assistant Crown Attorney Mike Boyce showed the two groups — Kabuya-Ntumba’s and Maadani’s — exiting a bar near the corner of George and Dalhousie Streets just before 3 a.m.

Krista Hill, who took the stand on Wednesday and narrated parts of the video under Boyce’s questioning, said there were probably 100 officers in the Market that night.

The groups diverged, but then came back together in an alcove near the restaurant.

Maadani sported a satchel on his hip during this altercation and, as the pushing began, he reached towards it, but Rashed placed his hand on top of Maadani’s in a gesture that appeared to suggest he did not want his friend to open it.

Kabuya-Ntumba appeared to pick something off the ground, but it was unclear from the preliminary video shown in court what, if anything, he had in his hand.

Kabuya-Ntumba was born in Montreal and moved to Ottawa when he was a year old, the middle child of three siblings.
