SRMT to host member referendum over cannabis talks with New York state

Before the referendum, tribal members can attend information sessions about a possible tribal-state agreement, with the first one scheduled virtually for April 16.

New York state’s prior adoption of the Marihuana Regulations and Taxation Act allows Tribes to negotiate a tribal-state agreement for the sale of licensed cannabis products outside of tribal territory.

While recreational use of cannabis for adults became legal in New York state in 2021, the state has not yet set out the rules for the legal sale of cannabis.

New York residents can legally visit the southern portion of Akwesasne, purchase cannabis for personal use, and then use it on their own property and other places where it’s permitted.
