Can market support more cannabis outlets in Timmins? | Sault Star

“Many of them have been supporting the illicit trade or black market over time.

I was the deputy-premier and the minister of health for five years, so I know a little bit about what I’m talking about.

The Ontario Cannabis Store, kind of the LCBO for cannabis, has very high markups compared to the role that most of the other provinces are playing – they’re a little greedy.

Licensed cannabis producers are required to pay a federal excise duty to the Canadian Revenue Agency when they package cannabis products for sale to a provincially authorized distributor, such as the Ontario Cannabis Stores, or OCS in Ontario.

“Two years ago, there was one store in Timmins, so nobody really knew there was the possibility of having different prices.

“Not yet, but we hope to see that change.

“Price isn’t the only thing.

“In any business, there is a saturation point, but with a business like this, that is so new, I really don’t think our store has anything to worry about.

“Normally the mom and pop shops have to charge more to keep up, whereas we don’t have to.
