Michelangelo Merisi di Caravaggio, a notorious criminal who was known to associate with the riff raff of Rome, was also one of the greatest artists of the 15th century.

The villa was built as a hunting lodge in 1570 and later sold to a cardinal who hired Caravaggio in 1597 to decorate the room he used for alchemy experiments.
