With trio of doubleheaders looming, focus turns to Mets pitching staff

Beginning Saturday, the Mets will play three seven-inning doubleheaders in seven days with only one off-day in that stretch.

And also from a pitching standpoint, not trying to stretch a guy out just because you think you’re going to be thin the next day.

Health is paramount for a team that saw, at one point, 18 players hit the injured list last month — including five of eight regular position players.

David Peterson will start Saturday in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Nationals Park, with the Game 2 starter still to be determined.

Once their 2021 Opening Day was delayed by five days due to the Nationals’ bout with COVID-19, that was just the beginning.

“We gotta stay with the day of the game and we gotta be smart about what we’re doing with these guys,” Rojas said.
