Browne, who grew up in the Centerville part of Cape Cod, and fiancee Samantha Taylor in 2016 came up with the idea of having an equitable cannabis competition.
The Grow-Off has been running annually in California and Colorado, and now Taylor and Browne are expanding.
She started growing in 1994, took a break for a while after her house burned down, and then started again about three years ago after Massachusetts voted to legalize.
“There’s nothing better than waking up in the morning and getting in your garden and enjoying that,” said Alvaro, who promotes her work as @Jane_Dirt on Instagram.
For Alvaro, one of the goals of joining the competition is to see how her breeding stacks up.
Even though it’s a competition, this is more to prove to myself that I can walk among the others out there.
The competition entry fee is $300 and includes the cost of the new genetics, all testing and tickets to the award ceremony, where the winner will receive a wrestling belt in addition to prizes from sponsors.
There are promo codes out there, Taylor said, as well as an equity grant for women-run grows, LGBTQIA growers and BIPOC growers.
Aside from the competition, Browne and Taylor, who are based in Denver, are excited to visit Massachusetts to check out spots on the Cape like Four Seas Ice Cream and Dino’s Pizza.
We’re like landlocked and with the altitude, you can’t get good bread here and all the seafood is frozen.
