The music festival, then called the Merle Watson Memorial Festival, drew a record 18,000 fans to Wilkesboro and the surrounding area over four days—after expanding from two days the year before.
Watson and Tim O’Brien jammed on “Blue Moon of Kentucky,” backed by Douglas on dobro, Wernick on banjo and the triple fiddles of Stuart Duncan, O’Connor and Rickie Simpkins.
