Toyota Canada is confident that a more capable and modern 2022 Tundra will double the company’s market share in a segment where it has little presence.
However, even if the demand is there, Toyota’s ability to make major inroads is limited by how many Tundras can be built.
Tundra production peaked at just over 240,000 in 2007, when an additional plant was assembling the pickup.
The 2022 model, expected to go on sale late this year, represents the first full redesign of the Tundra since the 2007 model year.
The optional electrified i-Force Max hybrid version makes 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet.
The Tundra shares a platform with the new Land Cruiser utility vehicle and an unspecified third vehicle.
Danilo Moran, general sales manager at Medicine Hat Toyota in Alberta, doesn’t think his customers will miss AWD or the V-8 engine.
